In only a few years, Snapchat has won a huge audience. When Evan Spiegel launched the platform, the social media space was dominated by 3 giant companies: Facebook was where people went for updates on family and friends, Instagram was all about beautiful photo content and Twitter was the realtime pulse of the web. Snapchat has somehow managed to counterbalance these strengths and capture the attention of a young audience (people aged between 16 and 30). How did that happen?
Snapchat went the opposite direction
Ever since the rise of the internet, entrepreneurs have created platforms in which everything is stored and archived. Snapchat went the opposite direction and is inspired by our reality: moments are temporary and that’s exactly the feeling and behavior that Snapchat is built upon.
One of the things that many people didn’t realise in the beginning was the way Snapchat works is much closer to how we communicate face to face than any other social network. When we talk to each other, walking down the street or performing daily activities, those moments vanish. Snapchat emulates that behavior and psychology, something that no other social platform does.
There are no established rules
Snapchat doesn’t abide to what social media marketing has taught us through Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. For many brands, agencies, artists, Snapchat’s potential is yet to be discovered. After so many years of creating strategies for traditional social media platforms, based on lasting content, adopting a different approach for Snapchat turns out to be quite challenging. The rule on Snapchat is… that there is no established rule! Authenticity weighs more than rigorous strategies, beauty is measured in creativity and content is ephemeral.
Snapchat follows key psychological principles
There are several psychological reasons why Snapchat turned from an entertaining messaging system to the newest marketing code to decipher.
